You Make Me Clean

Songwriting Blog Title (9).png
In June 2018, Illumine held its second annual Songwriting Weekend where several songwriters came to Illumine with a single goal: to start and finish writing a song that can be used by congregations for worship. Each week, we will be featuring one of the songs that was composed that weekend.

Why (did you write) this song?

"You Make Me Clean was written this year out of a desire to produce more songs for use during the Confession and Absolution portion of a worship service. I based the content of the song on Psalm 51 and the parable of the wise and foolish builders. As you look at the lyrics you'll notice the change that takes place in the life of a Christian because we are set free from our bondage to sin through confession." -Tim Babler

Song Breakdown

When you compare the finished product to Tim's stated goals above, I think it's pretty easy to see that he reached his goals. The influences from Psalm 51 and the parable are clear to see. And the song does walk you through the changes in the life of a Christian as a result of confession and absolution.

Use in Worship

This song has a pretty clear and obvious use in worship. It should be used in connection with Confession and Absolution.

The original key of the song is a little high for most congregations, so we have included both the original and another lead sheet in a lower key.
